Through photodynamic therapy, a range of soft tissue conditions in both humans and animals can be treated using targeted lasers. Here is our guide to the types of laser treatment available and the requirements for a diode laser systems that deliver stable laser energy at specific wavelengths and powers.

Laser diode modules for Low level laser therapy

Low level laser therapy (LLLT), or cold laser therapy, has been used to treat a range of conditions including skin cancer and soft tissue injuries, for wound healing and nerve regeneration. Using LLLT, cells can be stimulated directly, or the light can interact with a drug injected into the body to assist in creating a reaction that aids in the patient’s treatment.

Photo sensitizers

A photo sensitizer is administered to the area to be treated in many applications of photodynamic therapy, using a precise wavelength and power of light from either an LED or a laser source to excite the photo sensitizer. This method causes a reaction in the body of the patient to treat a localized, injured area.

Direct application

There are cases where a photo sensitizer is not required, as light from a laser source can be applied directly. The light penetrates the skin and treats the soft tissue. For example, this method can be used to aid in weight loss by exciting the fat cells. The laser liquefies fat within fat cells and causes the cells to release their contents which are then naturally removed from the body. As a result of the collapsed fat cells the area where the laser was administered reduces. Again, careful selection of the laser is necessary for a precise, localized treatment, with wavelength and power configurations matched to the specific application. Furthermore, a fiber coupled solution enables a more precise and targeted treatment to be administered to a specific area.

Versatility

The varied requirements for LLLT and photodynamic therapy necessitate versatile laser modules and assemblies. ProPhotonix offers a range of configurable products, and manufactures solutions for many applications in the medical and veterinary fields. Bespoke solutions and custom designs are also available, which enables products to be carefully tailored to meet your needs and ensures that every laser therapy system achieves the most effective results.

Initially, machine vision applications were largely restricted to industrial settings, but in recent times there has been a dramatic increase in the use of vision systems in medical imaging applications. Applications range from endoscopy to vascular imaging, and while each application has its own specific requirements, there are consistent challenges in terms of the illumination.

Form Factor

Medical imaging systems must be compact. In endoscopy applications, the reasons are very obvious, but a compact illuminator is also desirable in larger systems such as vascular imaging systems. Reducing the size of the illuminator can enable a reduction in the overall system footprint. This is an attractive prospect not only for the OEM but also for the end user.

Wavelength

Identifying the optimum wavelength is also a requirement in optimizing illumination for medical imaging applications. Recently, ProPhotonix worked with one of its customers to improve the overall image quality of their vascular imaging system by correctly identifying the specific infrared wavelength. The optimized wavelength solution resulted in a significant improvement in contrast and overall image quality.

Vascular Imaging case study

Intensity

Intensity is the most consistent attribute in medical imaging systems. The system will not perform to its full potential without the correct intensity. The key challenge in achieving high intensity of the illuminator is often managing the trade-off between the size limitations and heat dissipation. Chip-on- board LED technology allows for the direct contact between the LED chips and the thermally efficient substrate, providing the customer with superior thermal management. This LED packaging technology provides the capability to manufacture miniature light sources, such as those used in endoscopy, as well as very dense LED packages in a small form factor, where high intensity in a compact package is required.

Cost considerations

Solutions to technical issues are all very well, but there are also commercial issues that need to be considered. Cost is a major consideration in most medical imaging applications. It is a particularly sensitive issue where the illumination forms part of a single-use component of the system. In this case, the suppliers’ ability to manufacture in volume, and at a low cost, is a key consideration for the customer.

Due to our expertise in the design and manufacture of custom Chip-on-Board LED arrays and custom solutions, ProPhotonix is well positioned to design & manufacture the optimum solution for your medical application.

LED solutions for medical vision systems are becoming more prevalent to meet the demanding requirements of the medical device industry. In this post, we look at an example of how LED technology has been used to enable the development of a vascular imaging system.

Vascular Imaging Requirements

Illumination is a vital part of all medical vision systems and each medical imaging application will have unique illumination requirements. A customer approached us to provide a solution to their process that required LED lights for a medical vision system for their vascular imaging application.

The customer required an illuminator to highlight blood within the veins allowing for safer IV placement. The light source, in the IR spectrum, needed to be compact with high intensity. The customer chose LED lighting technology for a number of reasons:

  • Wavelength

The system required a specific wavelength in the IR spectrum for the delivery of high resolution, quality images of veins. The use of Chip-on-board LED technology provides a custom wavelength to illuminate the veins allowing the system to capture a high resolution vein image.

  • Intensity

A high intensity, LED light was required to illuminate through hair and skin to return the image produced by the system.

  • Uniformity

The uniformity of light provided by the LED line light provides an enhanced and improved contrast image for identification of veins.

  • Form Factor

The form factor of the light was a key consideration in determining the size of the overall system. The LED Line light enabled the customer to reduce the size of the system, making it lighter and more user friendly.

LED Technology

Chip-on-board LED lights for medical vision systems allow customers to exploit the benefits of LEDs including custom wavelengths, uniformity, intensity control and form factor.
